Nature trails and walks in Seychelles

Existing In glorious isolation since the breakup of the continents Gondwanaland 75 million years ago, the Seychelles islands are a living museums of natural history containing some of the rarest species of flora and fauna on earth.

While walking through the colourful locales of the Seychelles, you will discover some of the endemic and indigenous plant of the Seychelles such as the scoop owl, pitcher plant and jelly fish tree, also you may come across the Seychelles non poisonous wolf snake, world smallest frog the (sooglossus gardineri) and lots more.

Glacis Trois Freres – Mahé Island (Morne Seychellois National park) Length 800M, Altitude 200M, Interest – Panorama and Pitcher plants, Difficulty – Low.

• Dans Gallas – Mahé Island (Morne Seychellois National park) Length 2KM, Altitude 310M, Interest – Panoramic views, Difficulty – medium to high, Time to go and return = 2hr 30 min.

• Mare Aux Cochons – Mahé Island (Morne Seychellois National park) Length 7 to 10KM dependent of route taken. Interest – Landscape, Historic sites, Time to go and return = allow whole day. Difficulty = medium to high depending on route taken.

• Anse Major – Mahé Island (Morne Seychellois National park) Length 2.4KM, Altitude 70M, Time to go and return 3 hours, Interest Rocky landscape, ecology, coastal view, beach. Difficulty low,

• Morne Blanc – Mahé Island (Morne Seychellois National park) Length 1KM, Altitude 270M, Time to go and return 2hours, Interest – panoramic view, cloud forest ecology, Difficulty – medium,

• Copolia – Mahé Island (Morne Seychellois National park) Length 1.2KM, Altitude 180M, Interest – Glacis ecology, pitcher plants. Time to go and return 2 hours. Difficulty medium to high.

• Anse Georgette – Praslin Island. Length 1KM, Difficulty Medium, Interest, panoramic view, rare plants, Normally with this trail it is not return via the same path, it is continued to the famous Anse Lazio beach and return via Anse Boudin.
• Valle De Mai and Fond Ferdinand – Praslin Island, these are world famous trails, the place of the famous coco de
mer and black parrot and also for the endemic palms.

There are many other nature trails but the ones mentioned above are maintained by the ministry of environment to ensure safety. The others are in bad conditioned and not safe.

All trails are exposed from the sun, so you need good walking shoes, water, light snacks, and at high altitude cloud may obscure the view. Early start is an advantage because its still cold and chill outside. Do you want to go? A visit to the tourism office in Victoria will be of great help.

The rare Seychelles Black Parrot is also found in Seychelles precisely on Praslin. If you have read about the Giant Land Tortoise then come to Seychelles. Enjoy its sight in the Bird Island. He has also made his place in the Guinness Book of Records, as world’s largest tortoise weighing 304 kg.

 
Golden rules for hiking in the Seychelles : -
  • Keep to the well marked trails
  • Wear sturdy shoes
  • Avoid mountain paths in wet weather as they can become extremely slippery and quite dangerous.
  • Try to avoid energetic walks at midday as it is incredibly hot
  • Make sure that you take plenty of water with you
  • Don't forget your hat and suncream
  • Avoid walking alone in case of an accident and always inform the hotel where you are going and at what time you expect to return.
