Clubs for Wildlife |
Wildlife Clubs of Seychelles is playing significant role in protecting and saving the environment and living beings. Recently, they also received Commonwealth recognition for one of their projects. This project mainly deals on the enhancement of knowledge about the usage of traditional plants. This recognition for the efforts made by the WCS (Wildlife Clubs of Seychelles) was the cause of great celebration for its members
.
Valenchia Mogegeh, African Regional Director pf the Commonwealth Youth Programe and Vincent Meriton, Minister for Youth and Community Development appreciated a lot and encouraged members of WCS while passing the awards.
While handing over the medals and certificates to the representatives of young school, Mrs Morgegeh said, “People say that young people are the future, that they are the future leaders. A leader is groomed from a young age and I believe that this project is an opportunity for young people to take the lead in conservation.”
The Commonwealth Youth Program award is being honored for the successful efforts made on the “Heritage Gardens” project by Wildlife Club Seychelles. Interestingly, during this project various garden featuring medicinal and traditionally grown plants have been cultivated in 15 schools all over the Seychelles
Mrs Mogegah also added, “There are not many projects of this kind. It makes a very peculiar contribution to conservation and education to conserve nature, so it came as no surprise that it won an award.” On the other hand, Commonwealth representatives were also thanked for encouraging and giving this award to the school children and volunteers in conservation.
In the year 2004, the ambitious Heritage Garden Project was ventured with the strong support from Department of Natural Resources. To make things easier for the Wildlife Club members, a three workshop was also organized. This includes plantation and maintaining plants in schools. |

• Dans Gallas – Mahe Island (Morne Seychellois National park) Length 2KM, Altitude 310M, Interest – Panoramic views, Difficulty – medium to high, Time to go and return = 2hr 30 min.
• Mare Aux Cochons – Mahe Island (Morne Seychellois National park) Length 7 to 10KM dependent of route taken. Interest – Landscape, Historic sites, Time to go and return = allow whole day. Difficulty = medium to high depending on route taken.
• Anse Major – Mahe Island (Morne Seychellois National park) Length 2.4KM, Altitude 70M, Time to go and return 3 hours, Interest Rocky landscape, ecology, coastal view, beach. Difficulty low,
• Morne Blanc – Mahe Island (Morne Seychellois National park) Length 1KM, Altitude 270M, Time to go and return 2hours, Interest – panoramic view, cloud forest ecology, Difficulty – medium,
• Copolia – Mahe Island (Morne Seychellois National park) Length 1.2KM, Altitude 180M, Interest – Glacis ecology, pitcher plants. Time to go and return 2 hours. Difficulty medium to high.
• Anse Georgette – Praslin Island. Length 1KM, Difficulty Medium, Interest, panoramic view, rare plants, Normally with this trail it is not return via the same path, it is continued to the famous Anse Lazio beach and return via Anse Boudin.
• Valle De May and Fond Ferdinand – Praslin Island, these are world famous trails, the place of the famous coco de mer and black parrot.
There are many other nature trails but the ones mentioned above are maintained by the ministry of environment to ensure safety.
All trails are exposed from the sun, need good walking shoes, water, light snacks, and at high altitude cloud may obscure the view. Early start is an advantage. To prepare, A visit to the tourism office in Victoria will be of great help.
Why not make your own trail? The transport system on Mahe and Praslin are very efficient, avoid the rush hour in the morning going towards Victoria and out of Victoria in the evening. The bus fares are relatively cheap (half a dollar US) to anywhere on the bus route. When you see something nice just get off. (see our list of top beaches) Take a pack lunch and water with you.
