Culture

Diverse in its ethnicity, the Seychellois nation has a multitude of cultural influences that has harmoniously existed alongside each other, making for an interesting and multifaceted nation.  With the collective ethnic sways of the African, Indian, Chinese and European, a culture that is distinct from any other has emerged.

The rich concoction of traditions is still very much discernible, and is celebrated through national events like the Creole Festival and other activities like ‘Bazar La Brin’, which is a sunset market fair held by the beach.  There is little chance that the Seychellois will forget their heritage and that visitors will miss out on the experience of it.

The predominant religion of the Seychelles is Catholic, although there are various other religious branches. Over 80% of the population is Roman Catholic. In general, the Seychellois are avid church-goers. Sunday masses are very popular and most of the churches are quite jam-packed especially when there are important religious celebrations, with the church-goers clad in their finest attire, seemingly trying to outdo each other in the fashion department.

Victoria, the capital city, is another place where the locals flock, especially during the weekends, to parade their best outfits and assemble into groups to gossip and catch up, while others gather in the Sir Selwyn Selwyn Clarke Market to buy their provisions. The miniature ‘single traffic light’ metropolis is lively during the day, offering great opportunities to mingle with the locals and experience their amicable attitude and absorb the intriguing culture. Under the cover of nightfall, a different Victoria emerges; Victoria is enjoyably peaceful at night with surprisingly few night-revellers.

The locals also enjoy their version of the European picnic- a traditional family day out spent at the beach with plenty of good food and beverages, and maybe a game of domino, a game of cards, or something more energetic like beach volleyball or football. The Seychellois are convivial and they certainly enjoy a good time, an activity that will surely engrave your Seychelles experience.
