Culture

Diverse in its ethnicity, the Seychellois nation has a multitude of cultural influences that has harmoniously existed alongside each other, making for an interesting and multifaceted nation.  With the collective ethnic sways of the African, Indian, Chinese and European, a culture that is distinct from any other has emerged.

The rich concoction of traditions is still very much discernible, and is celebrated through national events like the Creole Festival and other activities like ‘Bazar La Brin’, which is a sunset market fair held by the beach.  There is little chance that the Seychellois will forget their heritage and that visitors will miss out on the experience of it.

Cultural heritage

Our culture derive from three continent which include Africa, Europe and Asia. Those three continents have influences us a lot like in our dances, our music, writing, visual arts and daily activities. The African rhythms are currently apparent in our dance like the famous 'séga', the 'moutya' dance and also the 'sokwe' a face hidden and mask dance. Our 'contredanse' and 'kanmtole' is derived from Europe precisely from France.

It was originated in the court of king Louis XIV. The Asia has influence the type of clothes our grand parents wore a long time ago, the 'kazak' and 'pénoir' and also our gastronomy. The architectural design of some of our houses also come from Europe. Traditionally, the seychellois performed their music on drums, violins, accordions, and the triangle. But nowadays, the acoustic guitar is also used as well.

Customs and locals

Victoria is the most vibrant capital one has ever saw. It is another place where the local people, especially during the weekend, parade their best out fits and assemble at the market to share week days gossip and catch up with the latest news, while others assemble in the sir Selwyn Selwyn Clark market to buy their provisions. Under the cover of nightfall, a different Victoria emerges. Victoria is enjoyably peaceful with surprisingly few night-revealers.

The locals also enjoy their version of the European picnic- a traditional family day out spent at the beach with plenty of good food and beverages, and maybe a game of domino, a game of cards, or something more energetic like beach volleyball or football. The Seychellois are very sociable and they certainly enjoy a good time, an activity that will surely engrave your Seychelles experience.
