Land Birds

Around 200 years ago, there was no permanent human settlement in Seychelles. When people started settling in this unique island, they also brought a whole lot of things for their survival, such as rice, maize, cotton, cattle, pigs etc. After the permanent settlement of human civilization, several other species have also been introduced.

In the new environment of Seychelles, some of the introduced species managed to thrive, whereas some died. Some of the introduced birds were mainly cage birds, such as Barred Ground Dove, Madagascar Fody and Waxbills. Most of the species around the villages and gardens are usually introduced species of birds and the native ones.

It has also been observed that introduced species may cause bad affect to the environment, as they might be predators or competitors. One of the major example is the Indian Mynah. Endemic Magpie Robins have great threat with the Indian Mynah, as it eats their eggs or chicks. Thus, you cannot import any bird species without the permission of Seychelles government.

Barn Owl is another species of land birds. Thousands of its species can be seen in Seychelles. This species was introduced by coconut plantation owners, as they survive over rats. Unfortunately, this species have become a major threat to another species. This led to announcement made by government for rewards on capturing a Barn Owl.

Check out the Barred Ground Dove with great number of population in Seychelles. This species of land birds is usually found in gardens, plantations and scrubs. They survive on seeds and small insects. This pretty small pigeon is identified with long tail, grey with narrow darker bars, pink breast and blue beak.

Feral Pigeon is another popular land bird of Seychelles. Around hundred of its species can be seen in this bird’s paradise. They can be easily seen in Mahe and Praslin, as this species is mainly found in town areas. They survive on seeds. This species is quite large with a varied colored plumage.
