Seychelles is a home of around 190 distinct species and there is a consistent increment in their number. There are various species that are occasional or vagrant visitors, along with several shore birds. These shore birds are migrants and come to Seychelles annually whereas they do not breed here.
Around 38 species of birds breed in Seychelles. Among these 38 species, nine were introduced. Native species refer to those that come to Seychelles on their own and bred. There are around 19 native land bird species. Other native species include seabirds. They spend maximum of their time at sea, whereas they return to breed on island.
Ocean going birds easily cross long distances over the sea from Asia and Africa. But, such a long flight is quite a huge barrier for the land birds. Thus, it is quite impossible for some new species of landbirds to arrive in Seychelles. But, in the recent times two new species have arrived in Seychelles. On the other hand, native land birds are quite few in number.
Grey Heron is one of the largest wading birds. You can observe its sight in the beautiful destination Seychelles. Major features of this bird are its long legs and long neck with spear-like beak. Earlier, this species of bird was extinct in Seychelles. But, its amazing comeback to this bird’s paradise has added a feather on the cap of Seychelles’s beautiful environment. During 1970, people had killed this bird for their survival, which led to their extinction. But, they manage to survive on outer islands.
Another immensely popular native bird is the Chinese r Yellow Bittern. This is a long legged yellowish bird often found near freshwater marshes. This is a very shy bird and prefers to hide in vegetation around marshes and ponds. Green-backed Heron is another native bird of Seychelles. It is a beautiful tiny heron and breeds everywhere in Seychelles.
